In 1918, the spanish flue killed more than the war itself. The novel is about a nurse who has to manage a unit care for pregnant women who have the flue. It takes place in Dublin. She has to cope with strong emotionnal situations, because these women are particularly at risk, also the babies ; And , on the second hand, there is a shortage of everything and a lack of human ressources. Moreover, the catholic church has a huge impact on people behaviours. So it's incredibly difficult.

The only doctor in which she can rely on is a woman who participated in the rebellion against the british government.

She's alone ; All the help she can have is an orphan who doesn't know anything to the care, but is quite intelligent and reactive and willl learn quickly.

She tries to do her best ; and, in that task, she breaks all the rules of the hospital. She's quite naive at the beginning, and she will learn a lot, for example how these orphan were treated in religious institutions at this time.
